How do different species of birds exhibit intelligent behavior?
I am very fascinated by the ways birds show intelligence. I have a pet bird myself, a green-cheeked conure named Sunny, and am constantly surprised by how smart she is. Before I got her, I had no idea birds could be so intelligent. I chose to research how other avian species show intelligence in my art because Sunny's behavior made me interested in this topic. I aim to show each bird's behavior by depicting them either performing it or with the objects/in the locations they use in my art. I have mainly focused on tool use, such as in SI #5, due to it being a rare behavior and a good determiner of a species' intelligence. The vasa parrot in SI #10 is shown with both a seashell and rocks because these are the objects it uses when practicing tool use. Some pieces, such as SI #4's depiction of fire foraging, show other behaviors. Throughout my sustained investigation, I have experimented with several methods of adding synthesis. I first created painted paper feathers mimicking Sunny's, then created mock paper feathers in my digital pieces, and finally decided to use real feathers she has molted in my later pieces. |
